What heat does to a battery
High temperatures speed up the chemical side reactions that permanently consume battery capacity. The effect compounds: a battery that spends summers soaked at 100°F+ ages measurably faster than one kept cool. Studies of hot-climate fleets consistently show accelerated degradation compared to temperate regions.
Cooling systems matter — a lot
Modern EVs actively cool their packs, and how well they do it varies by model. Liquid-cooled packs (Tesla, Hyundai/Kia, Ford, and most recent designs) manage Texas summers well. Older air-cooled designs — most famously early Nissan Leafs — suffered badly in hot states, and used buyers should check those batteries extra carefully.
Practical tips for DFW drivers
- Park in shade or a garage whenever you can. Cabin and pack temperatures drop dramatically.
- Don’t store the car at 100% in summer. Charge to 70–80% for daily use.
- Precondition while plugged in so the car cools the battery on wall power, not battery power.
- Expect some summer range loss from A/C use — that’s temporary, not degradation.
