5 Things to Check Before Buying a Used EV

A used electric vehicle can be a fantastic deal — depreciation hits EVs hard in the first years, which means big savings for the second owner. But it also means the risk lands on you. Here are the five things every buyer should check.

1. Real battery state of health

Don’t trust the dashboard range estimate. It’s a guess based on recent driving, not a measurement. The only reliable answer comes from reading the battery management system directly, which reports actual usable capacity compared to when the car was new. Anything above 90% is excellent; below 80% deserves a price adjustment.

2. Charging behavior

Plug the car in — both AC and, if possible, DC fast charging. A car that charges slowly or throws errors may need an onboard charger repair that can cost thousands. Check the charge port pins for corrosion or heat damage.

3. Battery warranty status

Most EV batteries carry an 8-year / 100,000-mile warranty, but it may not fully transfer to second owners, and some warranties only cover total failure — not gradual degradation. Verify what’s left and what it actually covers.

4. Software and recalls

EVs live and die by software. Check that the car is on a current software version and that all recalls have been completed. An unpatched car can hide known issues that the manufacturer has already fixed for free.

5. Tires and brakes — the EV way

EVs are heavy and torquey, which eats tires faster than a gas car. On the other hand, regenerative braking means brake pads often last very long — but that can lead to rusted, seized calipers on cars that were rarely driven hard. Both are cheap to check and expensive to ignore.
